Big Dance 2016 as part of Medway Council’s River Festival took place 0n Saturday 9 July, on Sun Pier just off Medway Street in Chatham. The pier came alive with dance workshops and performances for all ages and abilities to join in or watch.
From 12noon, there were free workshops in a variety of dance styles that you could try out such as Samba, Creative, Zumba, Active Armchairs and you had the opportunity to learn the Big Dance Pledge routine and be part of the Big Dance flash mob. You could watch free dance performances from community dance groups, private dance schools and professional companies – Big Dance 2016 was definitely the place to be!
Amongst the full programme of a variety of performances and workshops, Loop Dance Company performed a demonstration of their newest piece – ‘Blink’, Choreographed by Rebecca Thompson. Rebecca also performed a beautiful solo – ‘Art of Moving’, choreographed by Marie Forbes.
Along with the fantastic performances on the day, Loop Dance Company were commissioned by Medway Arts Team to work with a mixed ability youth group to create a piece based on the Big Dance Pledge, choreographed by Akram Khan. The performance portrayed the aims of the Big Dance Pledge beautifully. To celebrate this further, Loop Dance Company members taught the Pledge as part of a workshop which people from all ages and abilities were invited to join in and then perform together as a big flash mob!
